Dolores Huerta Street Sign Topper Ceremony on May 27, 2023.

Community leaders gathered Saturday to celebrate the newest honorary street sign toppers installed along Arlington’s International Corridor.

The new sign toppers, located on Pioneer Parkway at the Sherry Street, Carter Drive and Watson Road intersections in East Arlington, honor Dolores Huerta, an American civil rights and labor activist and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Arlington’s International Corridor stretches along Pioneer Parkway from Center Street to State Highway 360. At the request of Arlington’s Vietnamese and Muslim communities, the City installed honorary street sign toppers for General Tran Hung Dao along Pioneer Parkway at the New York Avenue and Browning Street intersections in 2019 and for Syed Ahsani at the Center Street and Collins Street intersections in 2021.

The League of United Latin American Citizens, the César Chávez Committee of Tarrant County, the Center for Mexican American Studies at the University of Texas at Arlington, and the Mayor’s Latino Advisory Council submitted letters to the City of Arlington to endorse the installation of the Dolores Huerta honorary street sign toppers, which were requested by members of Arlington’s Latino community.

In 1965, Huerta and Cesar Chavez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association that later transformed into the United Farm Workers of America. She advocated for the rights of farm workers throughout the country, seeking better work conditions and pay. Huerta worked as an elementary school teacher where she encountered children of farm workers attending school hungry and without shoes. She created the slogan “Si Se Puede” (“Yes We Can”) to inspire farm workers to organize for a better life for themselves and their families. Huerta promotes civic involvement for all through her foundation, established in 2002, to help develop leaders in marginalized communities.

As a reminder, honorary street sign toppers do not change the official name of the street and do not affect addressing, navigation, mailing or deliveries. Click here to learn more about Arlington’s Honorary Street Sign Toppers and Street Names.
