Flood Information Services and Elevation Certificates
The City of Arlington's Stormwater Management Division provides assistance to residents or property owners with questions about flooding and drainage issues on their property. Staff can provide information and general guidance regarding local drainage issues, known flood risks, flood depth or other flood-related data, historical flooding information, and other site-specific flood protection assistance. Information is also available regarding flood mapping, flood insurance, protected wetland areas, and functions of the natural floodplain.
Residents may request a one-on-one site from one of our Stormwater Management Engineers. During these visits, staff can review flooding and drainage concerns and provide site-specific information or recommendations such as lot re-grading, soil stabilization, construction of swales, earthen berms, French drains, barrier walls, or other applicable solutions to address a property's issues.
Property Protection Advice on retrofitting techniques such as dry floodproofing, wet floodproofing, and elevating buildings is offered to all residents and the general public. Reference materials and flood publications can be found through the Arlington Public Library and on our flood awareness publication webpage.
Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) are published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to delineate the Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs, or "floodplains") and other flood insurance premium-risk zones within the community. Information found on the FIRM can be used to write a flood insurance policy by providing flood hazard zone designations, panel numbers, and the Base Flood Elevation (BFE) for specified locations. The FIRM is publicly available to all City of Arlington residents, property owners, business owners, and visitors through the FEMA Flood Map Service Center , the Arlington Online Map Service, or on the City's page for FEMA Floodplain Insurance Rate Map Revisions Information
Stormwater Management Staff is ready to assist you with information about acquiring, maintaining, or increasing your flood insurance coverage. Assistance is also provided to help you locate and understand data on the FIRM, which can be used to determine requirements for purchasing flood insurance, assessing coverage options, or obtaining a Floodplain Development Permit.
Elevation Certificates may be necessary for flood insurance policies or Floodplain Development permits. The City can provide a copy of an Elevation Certificate upon request, if we have one on file for your specific property. The link below provides a list of addresses where the City has an Elevation Certificate available. If your address is not listed, you may need to hire a Registered Professional Land Surveyor to prepare one for you.
Staff can also provide residents with information on a variety of Financial Assistance programs in the form of grants and loans. More information can be found on the following websites:
