Phyllis McGeath's oldest son was killed in action while he was serving as a U.S. Marine in Afghanistan. She was determined to finish her degree because her son never got the chance to finish his.

Phyllis is graduating cum laude from The University of Texas at Arlington this Friday, December 16, 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in interdisciplinary studies.

She plans to return to UTA for a Master of Social Work in hopes of one day counseling and advocating for people who suffer trauma or grief.

For the third straight year, The University of Texas at Arlington will graduate a record number of degreed students by the completion of the 2016-17 academic year.

Visit the UTA commencement homepage for ceremony schedules, information and videos posted after some ceremonies.
