Community Watch Groups

Community Watch Groups empower neighbors to take ownership in the safety of their neighborhoods by reporting crime and any suspicious activity.

A Community Watch Group is a proven crime reduction tool. But like any self-help activity, its success depends on you and your neighbors.

Active Community Watch Groups meet with officers on a routine basis to discuss issues occurring in their communities. The Arlington Police Department is here to engage with community members and provide them with the best possible quality of life within their neighborhoods.

How do I start a Community Watch Group?

1. First, talk with your neighbors about the need for such a group, based on personal knowledge of crime or suspicious activity in your area. Then, set a time and place for your neighbors to meet and discuss topics of interest.

2. Next, fill out and submit the online Community Watch Group application form by clicking on the button below. The application will ask you to provide detailed information about your neighborhood and plans for your first meeting.

3. Invite APD employees to attend your meeting and present information on crime detection and prevention. You can do this by submitting an online Community Watch Group Meeting Notification form or by contacting the Crime Prevention Officer for your side of town (contact info listed below).

4. Choose coordinators and block captains who are responsible for organizing meetings and passing information to members.

5. Recruit others. Attendance is critical for the group’s success. At least 50% attendance over a one-year period with a minimum of two meetings is needed to qualify for posting Community Watch Signs.
