Water Project Update

A project to build a new 20-inch water main for a future elevated storage tank in East Arlington is set to start in July 2020.

In an Arlington City Council meeting on June 9, 2020, the council approved a plan for the Craig Hanking Drive water main project to start in July and end in September of this year. The expected cost of the water main construction is to be $225,610.

Every year, Arlington Water Utilities provides billions of gallons of water to residents through more than 1,400 miles of water main. Peak performance of the water distribution system is essential to providing safe drinking water for all residents.

In the City of Arlington Water Distribution Masterplan, the new water main route was planned to carry water to the future New York Avenue elevated storage tank. The upcoming project will consist of constructing 650 feet of water main along Craig Hanking Drive (New York to Oak Point Drive).

The water main construction will happen before a future project to fully renovate the street along Craig Hanking Drive, which is expected to begin in late 2020 to partner with the completion of the new East Library and Recreation Center.

A date for the New York Avenue storage tank project has not been set.
