A Call for Entries: It's Time to Enter the 2022 MLK Advancing The Dream Art and Essay Competitions

Every year, the Arlington Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee awards cash prizes and scholarships to local youth as part of its long-running art and essay contests.

The 2022 Advancing The Dream Art Contest and Essay Contest offer students an opportunity to showcase their creativity and knowledge of Dr. King's dream. The Committee will continue the Arlington Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Spirit of Service Scholarship, which is open to students currently enrolled at The University of Texas at Arlington and Tarrant County College Southeast.

The upcoming Advancing the Dream Celebration, which includes a step show, day of service and other activities, is set for Jan. 14-17, 2022. Judging will take place in December and the art and essay contest winners will be formally recognized at the Arlington MLK Advancing the Dream Awards Banquet on Friday, Jan. 14, 2022.

Art Contest

The 2022 MLK Art Contest is open to junior high and high school students attending Arlington schools or residing within Arlington city limits. Students enrolled in private schools and charter school in Arlington are also invited to submit their original art. The winning design will appear on T-shirts, posters, flyers and programs associated with the Arlington MLK Celebration. Scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000 are awarded to the top three winning artists. The deadline to submit is 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, 2021. Essay Contest

The 2022 MLK Essay Contest is open to high school seniors attending Arlington schools or residing within Arlington city limits. Students enrolled in private schools and charter school in Arlington are also invited to submit their original essays, which must be typed, double-spaced and not exceed 1,500 words. Scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000 are awarded to the top three winning essay writers. This year's theme is "Advancing The Dream: A Time to Reflect, Imagine, and Build the Future." Spirit of Service Scholarship

The 2022 Arlington Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Spirit of Service Scholarship is open to students currently enrolled in UT Arlington and TCC Southeast. This year's theme is "Advancing The Dream: A Time to Reflect, Imagine, and Build the Future." One student attending UT Arlington and one student attending TCC-SE will each receive a $1,000 scholarship for the best original essay. Click here for more information

Advancing the Dream Awards

Winners of the 2022 Advancing the Dream Awards in Education, Government, and Community will be announced at The Arlington MLK Celebration Advancing the Dream Awards Banquet on Friday, Jan. 14, 2022.
