National Flood Awareness Week

While dangerous floods and flash floods are possible throughout the year, they have a higher frequency during spring and summer thunderstorms, tropical storms and hurricanes.

Intense rainfall or slow-moving storms that track over the same areas can cause a rapid rise of water and flash floods can develop within minutes. Therefore, on April 12, 2019, Governor Greg Abbott proclaimed May 20-24, 2019, to be Flood Awareness Week in Texas and Mayor Jeff Williams presented a similar proclamation May 7 to the Public Works and Transportation Department’s Stormwater Management Division.

Both our state and local leaders recognize the importance of encouraging our citizens to be prepared for emergencies.

All residents should know the implications of flood watches and warnings, assemble an emergency supply kit; develop a communication plan for reaching family members, friends, neighbors and coworkers in case of an emergency; and designate a meeting place in case of evacuation.  Visit Stormwater Management’s Flood Safety and Preparedness web page for more ideas on protecting your family, home and property.

City of Arlington residents should also learn their flood risk by contacting the City of Arlington’s Stormwater Management Division. Our staff can assist in identifying a property’s flood hazard risk by providing flood depth and other flood related data, historical flooding information, local drainage issues and other site specific protection assistance. Our staff is available to explain the natural floodplain functions and discuss protection for these areas.  Contact Stormwater staff at 817-459-6550 for more information.

The City of Arlington participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, therefore flood insurance is available for all commercial and residential properties in the city. Owners of these properties are eligible for building and content coverage. Content coverage is also available to residents who rent these properties. Purchase flood insurance by contacting your local insurance agent or visit www.fema.gov/national-flood-insurance-program
