Five-Year Street Maintenance Plan
The City of Arlington’s Public Works Department maintains approximately 3,006 lane miles of public streets, including local, collector, and arterial streets. Maintaining this public street network requires both routine maintenance and larger planned investments to preserve pavement conditions, extend the life of existing streets, and reduce the need for more costly reconstruction over time.
The Five-Year Street Maintenance Plan (SMP) identifies the City’s planned street maintenance program for FY 2026 through FY 2030. The SMP includes streets anticipated for mill & overlay, full-depth asphalt reclamation, concrete panel replacement, and complete reconstruction based on pavement condition data, field review, maintenance history, available funding, and known coordination needs. The SMP is intended to improve transparency, support annual contract planning, and help coordinate street maintenance with water, sewer, stormwater, franchise utilities, and other public infrastructure needs.

The SMP provides a structured approach for identifying, prioritizing, and communicating planned street maintenance work. The SMP will be reviewed annually to reflect completed locations, update pavement condition information, allocate current funding, identify construction costs, introduce newly planned maintenance locations, and review coordination needs. Through this SMP, Public Works will continue to preserve Arlington’s existing public street network, coordinate maintenance work with other infrastructure needs, and provide residents and elected officials with a clearer understanding of planned street maintenance investments.
Routine preventative maintenance includes daily work such as pothole repair, localized pavement patching, small concrete repairs, and other day-to-day pavement maintenance activities performed by City crews. Larger planned projects include crack sealing, mill & overlay, concrete panel replacement, full-depth asphalt reclamation, and complete reconstruction.
