TLGC 143.026 Procedure for Filling Beginning Position
See Texas Local Government Code § 143.026.
The hiring process begins after you successfully pass the Civil Service entrance exam given by the Director.
During the hiring process, you must attend all scheduled appointments, turn in all required paperwork by the deadlines, and follow the instructions from the Arlington Fire Department and the City of Arlington Human Resources staff. If you do not, you may be disqualified from employment.
You may also be disqualified if information found during the hiring process shows that you do not meet the requirements for the job. If you are disqualified, the Fire Department or its designee will provide the Director with a written explanation of the reason.
A. Eligibility List and Request for Certified List
- After applicants pass the entrance exam, the Director creates an Eligibility List. This list includes the names and test scores of everyone who passed. Applicants are ranked from highest to lowest score. Veterans who were honorably discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces may receive extra points. If two applicants have the same score, the tie is handled according to the Civil Service Rules. The list stays active until there are not enough qualified applicants left or until it expires.
- The City Council decides how many Fire Department positions are approved. The Fire Department decides how many of those positions need to be filled based on current vacancies. The Fire Chief decides when to hire entry-level firefighters and how many applicants are needed. If an applicant is found to be unsuitable during the hiring process, the Fire Chief or a designee notifies the Director, who officially removes the applicant from further consideration.
- When the Fire Chief decides to fill an open position, a request is sent to the Director for a Certified Eligibility List of the qualified applicants who are still in the hiring process.
