Arlington students showed their appreciation for water this fall in Arlington Water Utilities' Value of Water coloring contest. More than 500 elementary school-aged kids entered the competition by completing the sentence "Because I have water, I can …" with an illustration. The entries demonstrated students are aware of how much they need water, whether it is to water flowers or help a fireman do his job.

Arlington Water Utilities co-sponsored the coloring contest for students in grades pre-kindergarten through 3rdgrade. Other co-sponsors were Tarrant Regional Water District's Water is Awesome campaign, River Legacy Living Science Center, and the Arlington Public Library. All winners and their teachers received an Arlington Public Library tote bag with five water-themed books, a water bottle and Water Is Awesome sunglasses.

Entries were submitted to local libraries, schools and River Legacy Science Center during September. Winners were announced Oct. 12 during the national Imagine a Day Without Water celebration. They are:

  • Pre-K Lincoln (entry submitted at the Arlington Public Library)
  • Kinder Kennedy from Mansfield ISD's Imogene Gideon Elementary
  • 1st grade Alex from Mansfield ISD's Gideon Elementary
  • 2nd grade Keren from Arlington ISD's Ashworth Elementary
  • 3rd grade Aris from Mansfield ISD's Charlotte Anderson Elementary

Water utilities and conservation groups nationwide work together to encourage water conservation through events like the annual Imagine A Day Without Water campaign. You can learn more about this year's celebration on Oct. 12 and future events at www.thevalueofwater.org.
