Made in Arlington: 2017 State of the City Address

From small businesses and restaurants to our manufacturing plants and major entertainment venues, great things are being made in Arlington. That's the message Mayor Jeff Williams delivered at the 2017 State of the City address, hosted by the Arlington Chamber of Commerce at the Arlington Convention Center on October 18.

A few of the highlights the mayor discussed this year included:

  • The National Football League announced the 83rd NFL Draft will take place at Dallas Cowboys AT-T Stadium in Arlington from April 26 to April 28.
  • Arlington ranked No. 1 in the Dallas Business Journal's economic development deals list, with $1.55 billion in business deals done.
  • With the launch of Milo in August, Arlington became the first city in the United States to offer an autonomous shuttle service to the general public.
  • UPS selects Arlington to build a regional hub, a move that will bring an estimated 1,400 full-time jobs.
  • Multi-platinum gospel artist Kirk Franklin opened his state-of-the-art recording studio, FoYoSoul Entertainment, in the heart of Arlington.
  • D.R. Horton, America's Builder and a Fortune 500 company, opened its headquarters in Arlington, bringing 500 jobs.
  • Champions Park in North Arlington is now open, offering dining and retail options such as Torcy's Tacos, BurgerFi and Tokyo Joe's.
  • The Public Works and Transportation Department has been hard at work with nearly $1 million in city street construction happening right now.
  • The 31-member Transportation Advisory Committee presented its multi-modal transportation recommendations to help Arlington City Council address the City's present, near-term and future transportation needs.
  • The City's Police and Fire Departments continue to be recognized on the state and national levels for programs and services that make Arlington safer and improve the quality of life.
  • Summit Racing Equipment opened its $82 million warehouse facility, retail super store and customer support center in Arlington.
  • The new Downtown Library is on target to open in summer 2018.
  • The City of Arlington and the Texas Rangers broke ground on the $1.1 billion Globe Life Field project.
