'Operation Shield' Highway Enforcement Results in Dozens of Arrests

The Arlington Police Department and its law enforcement partners made more than 350 traffic stops and nearly 50 arrests during “Operation Shield,” a multi-agency effort promoting highway safety in Tarrant County for the 2026 Labor Day weekend.  

Operation Shield was conducted Friday, Sept. 4 through Sunday, Sept. 6. Participating agencies increased the number of officers patrolling Interstate 20, Interstate 30 and State Highway 360 each evening, specifically looking for impaired and aggressive drivers. 

During the enforcement period:

  • Officers made 357 total traffic stops.
  • Officers stopped 19 drivers for traveling more than 100 mph on Tarrant County highways. The highest recorded speed was 112 mph.
  • Officers made 49 total arrests, primarily for DWI.

“I’m very proud of what we were able to accomplish during Operation Shield,” said Chief of Police Al Jones. “We will continue to prioritize highway enforcement in Arlington as we work to reduce crashes and save lives on our roadways.”

The Arlington Police Department would like to thank its law enforcement partners and MADD for participating in and supporting Operation Shield.
