The Arlington Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a 56-year-old man who was armed with a knife.
On Thursday, September 17, 2026, at 10:44 p.m., officers were dispatched to a home in the 1700 block of W. Lovers Lane for a suicidal subject call. The 911 caller indicated a man in the home was making suicidal comments and had access to knives.
Four officers responded to the home. The 911 caller met them at the front door and led them to the room the man was in. As officers approached the room, they could hear yelling and learned that a family member was also in the room with the man.
Officers opened the door to the room and got the family member out. As one of the officers entered the room, the man became upset and pulled out a large knife. The officer gave the man multiple verbal commands to drop the knife, but he did not comply. The man then moved towards the officer, still holding the knife. The officer fired his service weapon multiple times, striking the man.
Immediately following the shooting, officers provided first aid to the man until paramedics arrived. The man was transported to a local hospital where he later died.
No officers and no others in the home were injured.
As is standard procedure anytime an officer uses deadly force, there are now two investigations taking place:
- A criminal investigation led by the APD Homicide Unit, which will review the incident to determine if any criminal offenses were committed.
- An administrative investigation led by the APD Internal Affairs Unit, which will determine whether the officers followed department policies and procedures.
Per department policy, all four officers have been placed on administrative leave.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the man’s name.
