For Norma Marquez Nuñez, co-owner of Marquez Bakery, the American Dream is a story of family, hard work and a commitment to serving the Arlington community. What began as a small storefront in 1990 has grown into a longtime Arlington staple, carrying on the legacy of her father, Jose Marquez, and bringing generations of families together through food and hospitality.
“Their dream was to come work for a few years and go back to Mexico and stay in Mexico, because I had a really good life in Mexico,” Marquez Nuñez said. “But then when they got here, the American Dream just became bigger than they could have even imagined.”
Her father, a baker by trade, saw an opportunity in Arlington’s growing Hispanic community.
“My dad has always had a lot of vision,” Norma Marquez Nuñez said. “And he came to Arlington and he said, ‘Arlington needs a bakery.’”
Today, Marquez Bakery includes a panadería, a flour tortilla factory and a restaurant, all located in Arlington’s Entertainment District. Beyond serving Mexican and Tex-Mex favorites, the business has become a place where families gather and traditions continue.
“We have seen people come through this door over the years that came when they had small children. And now those children have children,” Norma Marquez Nuñez said. “Not only have we become a part of the community, but the community has become a part of us.”
After her father passed away, Norma and her sister continued his legacy, navigating the challenges of running a family business while remaining committed to quality and authenticity.
“I'd like to think that he would be proud of us,” Norma Marquez Nuñez said. “You know, that we have been able to carry this business for over 25 years since he's been gone.”
For Norma, entrepreneurship requires resilience, hard work and faith in your vision, even when the journey becomes difficult.
“A lot of times people think, you know, ‘Oh, you have a business, you're doing well.’ No, it's a struggle.” Norma Marquez Nuñez said. “If you have a dream and you believe in it and you put your hard work and effort into it, it's going to be good. It's going to pay off.”
Today, the Marquez family continues to honor Jose Marquez’s vision, preserving the traditions that have made Marquez Bakery an Arlington staple for more than three decades.
