On Thursday, September 17, 2026, at 10:44 p.m., officers were dispatched to a home in the 1700 block of W. Lovers Lane for a suicidal subject call. The 911 caller indicated that a man in the home, who was identified as 56-year-old David Eversole, was making suicidal comments and had access to knives.

Four officers responded to the home. The 911 caller met them at the front door and led them to the room Mr. Eversole was in. As officers approached the room, they could hear yelling and learned that a family member was also in the room with Mr. Eversole.

Officers opened the door to the room and got the family member out. One of the officers then entered the room. Mr. Eversole became upset and pulled out a large knife. The officer gave Mr. Eversole multiple verbal commands to drop the knife, but he did not comply. As the officer started backing out of the room, Mr. Eversole came towards him still holding the knife. The officer fired his service weapon multiple times, striking Mr. Eversole.

Immediately following the shooting, officers provided first aid to Mr. Eversole until paramedics arrived. Mr. Eversole was transported to an area hospital where he later died.

No officers and no others in the home were injured during this incident.

  • As is standard anytime an officer uses deadly force, two investigations were initiated:
  • A criminal investigation led by the APD Homicide Unit, which will review the incident to determine if any criminal offenses were committed.

An administrative investigation led by the APD Internal Affairs Unit, which will determine whether the officers followed department policies and procedures.

Those investigations remain ongoing.

Per department policy, all four officers were placed on administrative leave following the shooting. They have since returned to work.
