Arlington Approved for Five Qualified Opportunity Zones
Published on November 06, 2026
Arlington’s five Qualified Opportunity Zones (QOZ) were officially approved in an announcement of QOZ designations by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service. There were 20 total approved QOZs in Tarrant County.
Arlington’s approved QOZs include:
- Two tracts near Collins and I-30
- Two tracts in Downtown
- One tract in the International Corridor
Governor Greg Abbott nominated five eligible tracts on Sept. 4, 2026 that were chosen from eight of the city’s submitted potential opportunity zones. The new QOZ designations become effective on Jan. 1, 2027 and remain active for ten years.
The Opportunity Zone program offers incentives through capital gains tax abatement from the federal government for companies who invest eligible capital into qualified opportunity zone assets.
The zones were strategically selected in areas that are prime for development near major thoroughfares and highways, in addition to availability of commercial properties that could benefit from these types of incentives.
“Today’s announcement of the new designations will help direct private investment to these communities, expand economic opportunity, support job creation and unlock long-term growth in these communities across the country,” said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
The Opportunity Zone program was originally established in 2017, and was updated and made permanent through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act in 2025. The current iteration of the program, Opportunity Zone 2.0, encourages long-term private investment while strengthening accountability with refined eligibility criteria. Across the country, 6,576 eligible census tracts were nominated and designated as QOZs.
These five opportunity zones are especially significant for the City, as Arlington was only selected for one tract in the 2017 program. This East Arlington tract, near Pioneer Parkway and Collins Street, will remain eligible through Dec. 31, 2028.
