Planning to spruce up your home, garage or shed this summer? A deep clean is a great way to clear out the clutter, but it often uncovers leftover household products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients.

Known as Household Hazardous Waste (HHW), items like paints, cleaners, automotive oils, pesticides, and chemical batteries require special care. Improper disposal of household hazardous waste, such as pouring them down drains or toilets, poses a threat to human and animal health and pollutes the environment.

Important: Hazardous household waste should not be placed in your trash cart or recycling carts for curbside collection. Arlington residents with proof of residency have two free methods to dispose of household hazardous waste:

  1. Visit the Fort Worth Environmental Collection Center: Bring your HHW items to 6400 Bridge St. in Fort Worth. Note: Visits are limited to once per month per household. Visit the Fort Worth Environmental Collection Center webpage.
  2. Attend an Arlington HHW Collection Event: The City hosts periodic mobile collection events throughout the year. These are first-come, first-served. Capacity is limited, so be sure to arrive early! Check the City's Garbage and Recycling website for the next scheduled date.

Pro Tip: Got Latex Paint?

You can skip the trip to the collection center if your latex paint is dried out! Simply add kitty litter, sawdust, or mulch to the can and leave the lid off. Once the latex paint is completely dry and solid, you can safely place the can right into your regular trash cart. (Note: This only applies to water-based latex paint; oil-based paints must go to a hazardous waste facility).
