Bad Königshofen, Arlington's German Sister City, Welcomes New Mayor

Every six years, the hanging of the May wreath on the maypole in Bad Königshofen, Germany takes on a special significance. This is when the outgoing mayor hands over the town hall keys to his successor. 

Eighteen years ago, this was first done by then-Mayor Clemens Behr, who performed the handover ceremony high above the ground on the turntable ladder of the Bad Königshofen fire department. This year, Mayor Thomas Helbling passed the oversized town hall key to Frank Helmerich, who became the new mayor of Bad Königshofen on May 1, 2026.

The City of Arlington and Bad Königshofen, Germany, have enjoyed a Sister Cities relationship for 75 years. This friendship, "solid as a rock," is one of the longest-lasting Sister Cities relationships that exists in the world today.

During the key-exchange ceremony, Thomas Helbling bid farewell to "his townspeople" and thanked those gathered for their support over the past 18 years. He said that together with the town council, they had overcome both highs and lows and shared many special experiences.

Overall, he described his time as mayor of Bad Königshofen as a rewarding and multifaceted role, one he had enjoyed immensely. "With this," he said, "I officially hand over the key and my office to my successor, Frank Helmerich."

Amidst applause from those present, Helmerich thanked Thomas Helbling for the special handover ceremony. "I am looking forward to this new challenge, but I also approach it with respect."

Helmerich acknowledged that there were many things to be accomplished in the future for the benefit of the community, working together with the new town council. He expressed his gratitude to the administration, which, along with the mayor, had provided him with the necessary training. He said that together with the citizens, they would look forward to a positive, albeit at times demanding and challenging, future.

"I am looking forward to the next six years," he concluded. Amidst applause from those present, Helmerich thanked Thomas Helbling for the special handover ceremony. As is tradition, the Bad Königshofen Fire Department and its association provided food and drinks. The celebrity band, led by former mayor Clemens Behr, provided the musical entertainment, as usual. It was a special "get-to-know-you" day with the new mayor and a farewell to Thomas Helbling.

Amtsübergabe in 20 Metern Höhe am Marktplatz

Bad Königshofen (hf). Im Turnus von sechs Jahren bekommt das Aufhängen des Maikranzes am Zunftbaum in Bad Königshofen immer eine besondere Note. Dann nämlich übergibt der amtierende Bürgermeister die Rathausschlüssel an seinen Nachfolger. Vor 18 Jahren geschah dies erstmals durch den damalige Bürgermeister Clemens Behr, der diese Amtsübergabe in luftiger Höhe auf dem Drehleiterkorb der Bad Königshofener Feuerwehr vornahm. In diesem Jahr reichte Bürgermeister Thomas Helbling nun den überdimensionalen Rathausschlüssel an Frank Helmerich weiter, der ab 1. Mai neues Stadtoberhaupt von Bad Königshofen ist.

Auf halber Höhe verabschiedete sich Thomas Helbling von „seiner Stadtbevölkerung und sagte den Umstehenden Dank für das Mitbegleiten in 18 Jahren. Gemeinsam mit dem Stadtrat habe man Höhen und Tiefen überwunden aber auch besondere Erlebnisse gehabt. Insgesamt sei es für ihn selbst ein schönes und facettenreiches Amt gewesen, das er als Bürgermeister der Stadt Bad Königshofen gerne ausgefüllt habe. „Damit übergebe ich nun ganz offiziell den Schlüssel und mein Amt an meinen Nachfolger Frank Helmerich.“

Dieser dankte, unter dem Beifall der Umstehenden, Thomas Helbling für die besondere Amtsübergabe. „Ich freue mich auf die neue Aufgabe, gehe aber auch mit Respekt an diese heran.“ Es gelte in der Zukunft zum Wohle der Bevölkerung einiges gemeinsam mit dem neuen Stadtrat zu meistern. Dank sagte Frank Helmerich der Verwaltung, die ihn, gemeinsam mit dem Bürgermeister, eingearbeitet hat. Zusammen mit den Bürgern werden man in eine positive, wenn auch sicher teils anstrengende und herausfordernde Zukunft schauen. „Ich freue mich auf die nächsten sechs Jahre.“

Traditionell hatten Feuerwehr Bad Königshofen mit dem Feuerwehrverein wieder für Essen und Getränke gesorgt. Die Promiband unter Altbürgermeister Clemens Behr übernahm in gewohnter Weise die musikalische Gestaltung. So wurde es ein besonderer „Kennlerntag“ mit dem neuen Stadtoberhaupt und Abschied von Thomas Helbling.
