Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians in East Arlington can now enjoy a smoother, safer journey along Mitchell Street. The Public Works Department recently completed a comprehensive, $4.8 million overhaul of the roadway between South Collins Street and Sunnyvale Drive.
The transformative project, which broke ground in July 2025 and wrapped up in May 2026, replaced a severely deteriorated asphalt roadway with durable, long-lasting concrete designed to withstand decades of traffic. This section of Mitchell Street is located south of Meadowbrook Park and east of Julia Burgen Park Linear Park.
But the improvements stretch far beyond a fresh surface. This project modernized the neighborhood's infrastructure from the underground up, delivering:
Funding for this major neighborhood revitalization was made possible through the voter-approved 2018 Bond Election, with additional support from Community Development Block Grants (CDBG).
This project is just one piece of Arlington's ongoing commitment to neighborhood infrastructure and the City Council priority to Enhance Mobility. During Fiscal Year 2025 alone, the City invested more than $20 million into its Roadway Rebuild Capital Improvements Program, breathing new life into residential streets and major thoroughfares alike.
