For many older adults, a simple phone call can make a big difference.
The Arlington Police Department's Are You OK? Program offers free weekly wellness calls to help older residents stay connected, access community resources and provide peace of mind for their loved ones.
The program serves Arlington residents ages 65 and older who live alone or have a medical condition that requires them to remain at home. Each participant is paired with a trained Arlington Police Department volunteer who calls on the same day each week to check on their well-being, answer questions and identify any needs they may have.
"It's just to put their minds at ease — and maybe their family members' minds at ease — knowing that someone's going to call once a week to check on them and make sure they're doing okay and see if they need anything," said Crime Prevention Officer Doug Glotfelty.
Volunteers can also connect participants with local resources for food assistance, transportation, veterans services and other support programs throughout Tarrant County.
If a volunteer is unable to reach a participant, the program follows up with the participant's emergency contact. In urgent situations, volunteers can also transfer the call to 911 for immediate assistance.
"I had family that lived a long ways away, and there wasn't a program like this available at the time, but I think it would have been very beneficial," said Arlington Police Department volunteer Phil Livers. "I know there are a lot of people in the same situations."
Registering is simple. Participants provide basic information, including their name, address, phone number, emergency contact and their preferred day and time to receive a call.
