The Arlington Public Library has launched a new, extensive collection of over 200 circulating puzzles, generously donated by Arlington residents and dedicated library patrons, Hillary Relyea and Ben Gerdts. The collection, which includes puzzles featuring landscapes, famous artworks, and cheerful cartoon characters, was organized as a successful community drive in loving memory of the Gerdts’ 4-year-old son, Harvey.

Harvey’s family said their son found delight in simple things and, by the quiet force of his personality, invited others to do the same. He even brought joy and wonder to the mundane - always eager to help, whether that meant doing laundry, cleaning floorboards, or watering the plants. Above all, he was deeply empathetic, as he enjoyed family dinners, puzzling, cozy movie nights, walks to the park, essentially any excuse to spend time with those he loved, they said.

“Though his life was cut short, Harvey’s legacy of kindness and togetherness lives on in all who loved him. We hope these puzzles carry forward his spirit, fostering moments of connection and quiet joy in this community for years to come,” the family said.

The new puzzle collection offers something for puzzlers of all ages and skill levels, with boxes ranging from 24 to 3,000 pieces.

"We are honored to be the stewards of this incredible gift," said Libraries Director Norma Zuniga. "This isn't just a collection of puzzles. It's a profound, beautiful tribute to the spirit of a little boy who found such deep joy and curiosity in them. The Gerdts family has transformed their personal remembrance into a lasting, public legacy that will connect countless Arlington families through shared learning and fun.”

Each puzzle box is labeled with a sticker featuring a heart surrounded by colorful puzzle pieces that reads “Donated in Memory of Harvey Gerdts.”
