The weather is nice and warm today, but City of Arlington Public Works crews are already preparing for the ice and snow that’s expected to start this Friday and last through Monday afternoon.

Before the wintry mix arrives, Public Works crews are loading up the City’s sanding trucks and brine trucks that will be deployed later this week to keep priority locations safer for first responders and everyday commuters. These include highway bridges and underpasses and local hospital emergency department entrances. Crews are also inspecting their equipment, including the City’s four mid-size snowplows and a large grader that can scrape off accumulated ice from roadway surfaces, as well as setting up barricades near steep hills that may need to be closed to traffic for safety this weekend.

After the rain passes on Friday, Public Works crews expect to begin pre-treating a list of priority areas with a salt brine mixture to help prevent ice buildup. Then starting at midnight Saturday, crews will begin working 12-hour shifts, responding when needed to help improve traction for drivers on Arlington’s streets and nearly three dozen bridge crossings.  This includes Division Street (State Highway 180), Pioneer Parkway (Spur 303), the crossings over Johnson Creek, and the elevated bridge decks over Interstate 20, Interstate 30, State Highway 360 and U.S. Highway 287 in the city limits.

In addition to four brine trucks, Arlington has six large trucks used to spread out “ice-chat,” which is a sand-like material with salt in it. Arlington has more than 400 cubic yards of this light-weight material on hand to help drivers safely navigate any icy patches that may have developed in priority locations even after those areas were pretreated with brine.
