Donna Mack, an award-winning disability advocate and author, works with businesses that aim to improve profits and strengthen workplace culture through increased disability access and inclusion. Mack, who holds a master’s degree in education, has built a career helping clients navigate organizational change and foster environments where people are valued for their abilities rather than their limitations.

Her passion for advocacy is deeply rooted in her personal history. Mack said she was born prematurely after a long and complicated labor and grew up a shy but happy child who loved reading, art and spending time outdoors.

“I devoured entire library books, sometimes in a single night,” she said.

Her life shifted shortly before her twelfth birthday when she experienced sudden vision loss caused by retinal detachment. Mack said she and her family learned for the first time that her loss of sight had been inevitable because of her premature birth.

“As the world fades before me, I was confronted by the reality that some previously familiar people are now uncomfortable approaching me due to their own hyper-awareness of my disability,” she said.

Mack said she realized she needed to take the lead in social situations, initiate conversations and help others feel at ease. That responsibility, she said, became a guiding principle in her life and later shaped her work.

“It is imperative for me to reach out in a way that lets people put aside their preconceptions and view me as a person, not a walking disability,” she said.

That drive has fueled her career as a speaker, writer and advocate focused on bridging gaps in understanding and strengthening inclusion.

Mack, an Arlington native, is the parent of two adult children. She is a charter member of the Arlington Mayor's Committee on People with Disabilities.

Through her work, Mack continues to push for broader acceptance and access in professional settings, aiming to create spaces where individuals with disabilities can thrive and contribute fully to their communities.
