Emergency Prep for Pets: What to Pack in Your Animal’s Go-Kit

Is your pet ready to go on a moment’s notice in the event of a natural disaster or severe weather? Being prepared in advance can significantly relieve stress and keep your furry family members safe during an emergency.

Whether you need to evacuate or shelter in place, follow these steps to ensure your pets are protected:

Step 1: Keep Identification Up to Date

• License and register your Arlington dog or cat with the Animal Services Center annually.
• Microchip your pet and ensure your contact details remain current with the chip registry.
• Keep a collar on your pet featuring its current city identification tag and rabies vaccination tag.

Step 2: Build a Pet "Go-Kit"

Assemble an emergency kit stored in a portable, waterproof container. Recommended items include:

• Leash, collar, and/or harness
• A size-appropriate pet carrier or crate (ensure cats have space for a small litter box)
• A one-week supply of fresh water and pet food
• Food and water dishes
• Prescribed medications, medical records, and vaccination history
• A blanket and a familiar toy to reduce stress
• Waste bags for sanitary disposal

Step 3: Organize Critical Contacts

Keep a printed list of emergency contacts in your go-kit, including:

• Your veterinarian and local emergency vet clinics
• Pet-friendly hotels or temporary housing options outside your immediate area

• Trusted family, friends, or neighbors who can assist if you are away from home

Stay Informed and Prepared

Remember to refresh food, water, and medications in your go-kit periodically so items do not expire.
