Día de los Niños – The Art of the Book
Día de los Niños – The Art of the Book will take place on Thursday, April 30 from 5:30–7 p.m. at the East Library & Recreation Center. This family-friendly celebration invites guests to create their own books and book-themed crafts, enjoy storytime with library staff, and take part in a Book Walk where every participant receives a free new book. With games, activities, and plenty of reading fun, the event offers a joyful way to celebrate children and literacy.
Concerts at Levitt Pavilion
Free live music returns on May 1–2 from 7:10–10 p.m. at Levitt Pavilion Arlington for another exciting weekend of concerts under the stars. Friday, May 1 features the Levitt Youth Spotlight at 7:10 p.m., and headlining is Shamarr Allen at 8:30 p.m., bringing his signature New Orleans blend of jazz, funk, hip-hop, blues, and rock.
Saturday, May 2 begins with the Levitt Youth Spotlight at 7:10 p.m., then the Graham St. Clair Band at 7:30 p.m. with their rising Texas country sound, followed by blues-rock artist Liam St. John at 8:30 p.m. Known for its energetic atmosphere and free admission, Levitt Pavilion is the perfect place to bring a lawn chair, gather with friends, and enjoy a weekend of outstanding live music in downtown Arlington.
Chess Club Tournament
Young strategists can put their skills to the test on Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at the Southwest Branch Library during this exciting Chess Club Tournament. Open to students ages 7 to 17, the five-round Swiss-style competition gives players the chance to compete in up to five timed matches, with plaques awarded to the top five finishers. From smart openings to checkmate moments, it’s a fun day of focus, friendly competition, and classic chess strategy.
Comic Book Day
Comic fans of all ages can join the fun on Saturday, May 2 from 11 a.m.–7 p.m. at Coliseum Comics & Games for the annual Free Comic Book Day celebration. This family-friendly event features free comic giveaways, board games, a costume contest, and plenty of activities designed to spark imagination and encourage reading. Whether you're a longtime collector or brand new to comics, it’s a super way to spend the day.
Denim Blooms for Mom
Looking for a heartfelt Mother’s Day gift with a creative touch? Join Denim Blooms for Mom on Saturday, May 2 from 2–4 p.m. at the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library, where participants will transform old denim into a beautiful handmade bouquet. With all materials provided, this fun upcycling class offers a unique way to create a keepsake or gift, with space available for the first 12 attendees ages 13 and up.
The Stories We Carry: William Shemin and The Ivy Hero
“The Stories We Carry: William Shemin and The Ivy Hero” at the National Medal of Honor Museum invites participants to reflect on how values like service, courage, and perseverance are carried across generations—and how those same values show up in their own lives. The program will begin with a live conversation featuring Sara Shemin Cass and Dan Burstein, relatives of Medal of Honor Recipient William Shemin and co-authors of The Ivy Hero. Shemin was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2015 for his actions during World War I. Following the program, families are invited to participate in guided activities and a meet-and-greet book signing. This free event is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, May 3 in the Neel Kearby Theatre at the NMOHM, 1861 AT&T Way. Reserve your free ticket to The Stories We Carry.
