As days grow shorter and evening activities continue, the City of Arlington encourages residents to prioritize safety while walking or cycling at night. Staying visible and aware are the keys to preventing accidents and ensuring a safe journey for everyone on the road.

For Walkers:

  • Be Bright: Wear light-colored clothing or, even better, reflective materials. A reflective vest or jacket is a great investment.
  • Carry a Light: A small flashlight or headlamp can help you see and be seen by drivers.
  • Stick to Sidewalks: Use sidewalks whenever they are available. If you must walk on the street, walk facing traffic so you can see oncoming vehicles.
  • Stay Alert: Avoid distractions like cell phones and headphones. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Cross Smart: Cross streets at designated crosswalks and intersections. Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the road to ensure they see you.

For Cyclists:

  • Light Up Your Ride: State law or best practices often require a white front light and a red rear light. A front light with at least 600 lumens is recommended for seeing and being seen.
  • Enhance Visibility: Use reflective tape on your bike frame, helmet, and clothing. Consider a high-visibility vest or jacket.
  • Follow Traffic Laws: Obey all traffic signals, stop signs, and lane markings. Ride with the flow of traffic.
  • Be Predictable: Use hand signals to indicate turns and stops. Ride in a straight line and avoid sudden swerves.
  • Perform a Safety Check: Before you go, ensure your brakes, tires, and lights are in good working order.

The City of Arlington reminds all road users—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians—to share the road with respect and caution. By working together, we can make our community safer for everyone.
