The Public Works Department has recently completed the survey to assess the street conditions in Central Arlington. Each year the vendor collects data on one-third of the City’s Streets. This year’s survey focused on Arlington streets south of SW Green Oaks Boulevard to the city limits.
This phase consisted of contracting with a third-party vendor who operates a fleet of data collection vehicles equipped with an array of precision instrumentation and data collection equipment.
Pavement Condition Survey Information
The data collection vehicle travels on the roads in the target area collecting information on the type, extent, and severity of pavement surface distress (i.e. cracks and ruts) in addition to collecting information on the smoothness and ride comfort. Below are visual examples of various asphalt and concrete road conditions:

Using technology to gather and record roadway data allows the City to develop a comprehensive and proactive approach to roadway management that ensures road maintenance budgets are spent wisely. Using this approach, more than 660 lane miles was improved under the Street Maintenance Program. The Public Works Department performed work on roughly 570 lane miles and contractors performed work on over 90 lane miles during Fiscal Year 2025. Additionally, 9.7 miles were improved through Capital Improvement projects.
Please visit the Public Works Department’s webpage for additional information on the street maintenance program and other Capital Improvement Projects. This project aligns with the City Council’s priorities to Enhance Mobility.

Data in Action caption: The Public Works Department uses a scoring system of Red, Yellow, or Green to determine what roads needs attention and what type of repair technique to use on each road to prevent deterioration and costly rebuilds. The City’s policy is to perform maintenance or rebuild the streets rated Red, which is the worst condition, first in order to achieve a more balanced network over time. Maintenance is also performed on streets rated Yellow.
- Number of lane miles improved under the Street Maintenance Program in FY25: 660+
- Approximate number of lane miles across Arlington: 3009
- Percentage of road segments with an Overall Condition Index, or OCI, categorize as Yellow or Green: 80%
