Arlington Water Utilities recently released its 2024 Year-End report, which highlighted the accomplishments of the City of Arlington water and wastewater services provider. Water Department Director Alex Whiteway presented the report to the Arlington City Council at their March 4 meeting. It is available online here: https://joom.ag/UoMd.

In a message within the report, Whiteway said the document shows that the utility has highly trained employees who use technology to make sure residents' dollars are spent wisely.

"As we move into a new year, we look forward to significant milestones, such as completing the $112 million, four-year upgrade of the Pierce-Burch Water Treatment Plant and celebrating the first graduates of our new residents’ academy, Arlington Water Utilities University. I am proud of Arlington Water Utilities’ accomplishments and its dedicated employees, and I am looking forward to what the future holds," says Whiteway, who was appointed director in June 2024.

Some of the information in the report includes:

  • Arlington Water Utilities is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of more than $6 billion in infrastructure throughout the City, including two water treatment plants, 10 elevated water storage tanks, 1,260 miles of sanitary sewer mains, 1,469 miles of water mains, and 23,988 water valves.
  • Arlington Water Utilities has realized considerable savings for residents by completing small construction projects in-house with a specially trained Capital Improvement Projects, or CIP, crew. In 2024, the crew completed the projects below and saved Arlington $1,022,486 when compared to the cost of private construction contracts. A department engineer also designs the projects, saving $17 per foot of main.
  • The upgrade at the Pierce-Burch Water Treatment Plant in West Arlington is on schedule for completion in fall 2025. Construction on the project began in late 2021. The enhancements include new chemical facilities, new clear wells for storing water, a new high-service pump station, power distribution facilities, and emergency generators. The Pierce-Burch Water Treatment Plant, located at 1901 Lakewood Drive, was built in 1972. It has a water treatment capacity of 75 million gallons per day.
  • In October 2024, Arlington Water Utilities released the results of an 18-month-long water service line inventory. The inventory, which is available to the public at ArlingtonTX.gov/sli, began after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency updated guidelines for lead and copper monitoring by public drinking water providers. None of the water service lines in Arlington were found to be made of lead.
