A dust storm with strong winds couldn’t stop 44 volunteers from joining the Neighborhood Enhancement Team (NET) on Saturday, March 15, from assisting neighbors at a community cleanup event in a North Central Arlington neighborhood.

A total of 7.78 tons (15,560 pounds) of trash and debris was removed from the North Central Historic District and Town North neighborhoods during this event, bringing the citywide total of cleanup by NET to almost 169 tons (over 337,500 pounds) since the program began in 2019.

A total of 13 households requested and received hands-on assistance with property cleanup from dedicated volunteers.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said an appreciative resident on North Oak Street. “I love it, it is really nice and saves me from having to do it.”

The new tool sharing trailer made its debut at the event, loaded with tools to aid volunteers during the cleanup effort. A total of 18 items were used for property improvements such as mowing, tree trimming and more. The additional trailer was added due to growing popularity of the program.

The trailer, equipped with tools and equipment such as wheelbarrows, power washers, painting and fence repair kits are among almost 60 varieties of tools for free use by Arlington residents. The program offered by Code Compliance is mobile. Tools and equipment are brought to the resident’s doorstep, dropped off, and picked up in three days.

Tool sharing program participants express lots of appreciation for the program. It comes in handy when a resident’s mower breaks down, and weeds are growing. Learn more about borrowing tools here.

A block party following the cleanup was attended by about 55 people who enjoyed hot dogs and refreshments as they celebrated their accomplishments.

Community partner, David Jackson, “The Retired Librarian” with Community Advocating for Prosperity and Opportunity (CAPO), generously provided 82 free books for this community.

The success of NET events is made possible through community participation and the dedication of our wonderful, caring volunteers and community partners. Special appreciation to First Methodist Church of Arlington, David Jackson with CAPO, Arlington Hispanic Citizen Police Academy, Mount Olive Baptist Church, Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, Republic Services, and all city staff that helped support this event.
