LiDAR Sidewalk Van driving through Downtown Arlington

By Public Works Department

Beginning Tuesday, August 12, the Public Works Department will launch an important initiative to assess the condition of sidewalks and pedestrian facilities across the city. This project is a key step in updating Arlington’s Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan and creating the City’s first comprehensive Sidewalk Master Plan.

To support this effort, residents may notice a specialized van equipped with LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology driving through neighborhoods. This LiDAR van will scan sidewalks within the public right-of-way, collecting high-resolution data that will be used to evaluate surface conditions and compliance with ADA accessibility standards.

What is LiDAR Scanning?

LiDAR is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to precisely measure distances and generate highly detailed, three-dimensional maps of physical environments. LiDAR allows cities to efficiently collect accurate data on infrastructure such as sidewalks, ramps, and curbs—critical elements in ensuring accessible public spaces. The technology enables the city to identify needed repairs or upgrades with a level of detail and speed that is efficient.

Purpose and Scope of the Project

This sidewalk survey represents the next phase of the City’s broader effort to enhance accessibility and pedestrian mobility throughout Arlington. The goals of this initiative include:

  • Evaluating existing sidewalks and pedestrian facilities
  • Updating the ADA Transition Plan
  • Developing a data-driven Sidewalk Master Plan
  • Identifying and prioritizing future sidewalk improvement projects

The Sidewalk Master Plan will use the data collected to create a long-term, citywide strategy for improving and expanding pedestrian infrastructure. This will help the City to deliver high-impact improvements where they are most needed—making the city more walkable and inclusive for all.

Survey Schedule and Coverage

The data collection team will begin surveying on Monday, August 11, starting in the southwest corner of the city. The full survey is expected to take approximately six weeks, continuing into late September.

Community Engagement Opportunities

The City of Arlington recognizes that input from residents is vital to the success of this initiative. To ensure transparency and encourage public involvement, the city will engage with the community in a variety of ways:

  • Partnering with the Mayor’s Committee on People with Disabilities
  • Launching a project website
  • Providing interactive mapping tools
  • Distributing online surveys
  • Hosting community public meetings

These efforts aim to gather feedback and ensure the final plans reflect the community’s priorities and values.

Building a More Accessible City

The redevelopment of Arlington’s ADA Transition Plan—along with the creation of the Sidewalk Master Plan—will allow the City to better serve all residents by creating a safer, more connected, and more accessible environment. Your patience and cooperation during the data collection phase is appreciated as Arlington takes this important step toward improving mobility for everyone in our community.
