With the Spring season now upon us, there's nothing quite like spending time in nature and enjoying the beauty of our award-winning parks system. Whether it's a relaxing stroll, a brisk hike, or a family picnic, spending time in nature is a great way to unwind and connect with the world around us, but it's essential to do so responsibly and in compliance with park ordinances. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy your time outdoors while respecting the environment and the rules in place.
  • First and foremost, take some time to research the park you plan to visit and familiarize yourself with any specific ordinances or guidelines in place. This could include rules about off-leash pets, how to reserve a pavilion, which trails are open for use, or even the use of specific recreational equipment.
  • Another important aspect of responsible park use is ensuring that any activities you plan to engage in are allowed and permitted at that specific location. For example, if you plan to set up a bounce house for a child's birthday party, securing the necessary permit in advance is required. Similarly, if you're planning to bring alcohol or use amplified sound equipment, you'll need to obtain any necessary permits or pavilion reservations in advance. Events with more than 200 guests are also required to secure police security for the duration of the event.
  • Keep the confetti eggs at home. Confetti-filled eggs may seem like a harmless and festive addition to holiday celebrations. However, they are prohibited in City parks because they can cause significant harm to animals and the environment. When these eggs are smashed or broken, the tiny pieces of confetti can scatter across the ground and into nearby waterways, where they can be mistaken for food by wildlife such as birds, small mammals, and fish. Ingesting these tiny bits of plastic or paper can lead to digestive problems or even death. Additionally, the litter left behind by confetti-filled eggs can take years to decompose, polluting the environment and harming local ecosystems. As such, it's important to choose alternative, eco-friendly options for holiday celebrations and avoid using confetti-filled eggs in our parks.
  • Finally, be considerate of other visitors to the park. This could mean keeping noise levels down, being courteous on shared trails or walkways, or simply being mindful of your impact on the environment. By treating others with respect and kindness, we can all enjoy our time in nature and help create a positive experience for everyone.
