It’s that time of the year again! The Public Works Department is preparing to survey the street conditions in North Arlington. Each year, a third-party vendor collects data on one-third of the City’s Streets. This year’s survey will focus on all public streets north of Park Row Drive.

The contracted vendor operates a fleet of data collection vehicles equipped with an array of precision instrumentation and data collection equipment to assist the City with the survey. The data collection vehicle travels roads in the target area collecting information on the type, extent, and severity of pavement surface distress (i.e. cracks and ruts) in addition to collecting information on the smoothness and ride comfort.

Using technology to gather and record roadway data allows the City to develop a comprehensive and proactive approach to roadway management that ensures road maintenance budgets are spent wisely. Using this approach, the Public Works Department performed work on over 379 lane miles during Fiscal Year 2022. Of these, 34 miles were improved through a capital improvement project, the remaining lane miles received maintenance work either by city staff or contractors.

This project aligns with the City Council’s priorities to Enhance Regional Mobility and Leverage Technology.
