Celebrate Global Diversity Awareness Month in Arlington
Celebrate Global Diversity Awareness Month in Arlington
Published on September 29, 2022
By Office of Communication
October is Global Diversity Awareness Month. We are fortunate that Arlington is 8th most diverse city in the nation, and during this time we are encouraging residents to celebrate and spread awareness about the diversity represented throughout our community. With it being easier now than ever to connect, Global Diversity Awareness Month highlights the importance of sharing and learning more about our unique cultures and life experience.
Listen to music from different places around the world.
Check out Symphony Arlington’s upcoming 2022-2023
Music That Grows on You season
or enjoy Levitt Pavilion Arlington’s
free fall concert series in Downtown
.
Learn about the various diversity awareness events
happening in October, including Filipino-American Heritage Month, Indigenous Peoples Day, Italian-American Heritage Month, LGBTQ History Month, and Polish-American Heritage Month. The Arlington Public Library, for example, is hosting a variety of Hispanic Heritage Month events through Oct. 15. This includes bilingual storytime, crafts, a Culture Passport activity and the opportunity to submit a photo of a loved one for two Dia de los Muertos public ofrendas. The University of Texas at Arlington is hosting its
inaugural Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration
, which is free and open to the public, on Oct. 10.
Watch a documentary.
Documentaries are an excellent source of information and offer various community perspectives on topics such as race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and more. Arlington residents will have an opportunity to catch a free screening this month of “A Place of Our Own,” which is the first episode of the documentary Echoes from the Hill. The episode explores what life was like for Black residents in a small Arlington community known as The Hill. Approximately a five-block area of the city, The Hill was the only historic addition platted specifically for Arlington’s African American residents. The first screening will be held at UT Arlington on Oct. 18, with more screenings to be announced at a later date.
Support minority-owned businesses across Arlington.
MyArlingtonTV’s
“Arlington Eats”
and
“American Dream Stories”
are a great resource to help you discover new restaurants and businesses in your community. Recent episodes include features on
Marquez Bakery
,
Kintaro Ramen
,
Olive’s Mediterranean Grill
, and the family-owned
Canales Furniture
in Arlington.
Visit a local museum
to explore exhibits on various communities, cultures, and histories. The Arlington Museum of Art’s new Exhibit,
A Knight’s Tale
, direct from the renowned Museo Stibbert in Florence, Italy, opens Oct. 22.
