The Arlington City Council's three at-large representatives—Ruby Faye Woolridge, Dr. Victoria Farrar-Myers and Dr. Barbara Odom-Wesley —hosted a telephone town hall meeting March 1, 2022, to provide residents with information and answer questions about the future of citywide residential trash collection.

At least 2,038 people listened in during the telephone town hall, which was one of six town hall meetings that have been held on the topic this year.

Residents currently set out bagged trash at the curb, which is picked up twice a week by hand and then placed into the back of a trash truck. Major solid waste operators, however, are discontinuing manual collection because of decreasing labor supply. Instead, many of these companies are relying on automated trucks that can pick up and empty trash carts using a mechanical arm to collect trash faster and safer.

Arlington already uses automated trucks for recycle service which uses wheeled bins which are picked up once a week.

Questions or comments can also be sent to the City by email at trashpickup@arlingtontx.gov.

The meeting was simulcast in both Spanish and Vietnamese. Follow the links below to listen to the full conversation.
