The Arlington Police Department has launched a body-worn camera program and citizens have started seeing the equipment on the streets this week. In an effort to educate the public on the department’s program, a webpage has been created to highlight awareness on deployment of the body-worn cameras.

All sworn officers, sergeants, and lieutenants will be issued body-worn cameras. The department anticipates to complete the equipment rollout to staff by the end of March 2018.

Uniforms have been retrofitted to allow integration of the body-worn camera into shirts, jackets, and safety vests. The cameras are securely mounted to the inside of the garments and capture audio and video of citizen encounters that are required by policy.

The Arlington City Council authorized the police department to negotiate a contract for body-worn cameras over the summer. The vendor selected by the department was Utility Associates, Inc. Officers who have been issued equipment have been trained in their use, operation, and applicable policies.
