Straumann, Global Leader in Dental Prosthetics, Doubles Its Arlington Production Site
Straumann Manufacturing, a global leader in dental prosthetics, recently completed expansion of its only North American production facility, located right here in Arlington.
Besides agreeing to add 12 new jobs, the dental implant manufacturing company doubled its facility. Straumann now leases the entire 27,000-square-foot building at 916 113th Street in the Great Southwest Industrial District.
The expansion allowed the company to increase its production capacity by 71 percent and bring in the latest technology to increase the precision and speed with which dental prosthetics are made.
"Straumann's vision for the future is to become a "Total Solutions Provider' for dental laboratories. The completion of this extensive expansion project is another example of our commitment to providing dental laboratory customers with the solutions and services they need to meet the needs of their referring clinicians," said Steve Sheehan, Vice President Laboratory Division North America said in a press release.
Economic development incentives helped Arlington keep the project, which brought about $10 million worth of state-of-the art equipment to the site. The company, needing to expand to keep up with growing demands, had considered relocating the production facility to Andover, MA, the site of its U.S. headquarters. Straumann's main headquarters is located in Switzerland.
To keep Straumann and its manufacturing jobs in town, the Arlington City Council authorized a Chapter 380 Program Agreement in early 2015 that outlined economic development incentives for the company if it stayed and expanded.
Under the agreement, Straumann will receive a grant equivalent to 85 percent of the city's portion of business personal property taxes paid for seven years on the property related to the expansion. This will save the company approximately $400,000 between 2016 and 2022.
Additionally, the City will provide a grant of $2,000 per Arlington resident who is hired, as long as the employee's wages are confirmed to be above Arlington's median wage for that year.
Annual certifications are required prior to grant payments.
The Straumann retention efforts are an example of the Arlington City Council's priority to Invest in our Economy.
