Arlington skatepark dedication ceremony set for Tuesday, March 12, 2013

The new Cody Rocamontes Memorial Skatepark will be officially unveiled at a dedication ceremony on, Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at Randol Mill Park. Construction of the skatepark by Spohn Ranch was completed on January 4, 2013. The new 5,400 square-foot facility includes skating and BMX challenges for both beginner and intermediate users.

Cody David Rocamontes passed away at age 15 when he was struck by a car on his way to skate his favorite spot behind a retail store. Since the tragic event, the City of Arlington partnered with Cody Rocamontes Inc. (CRI), a local non-profit group created in Cody's honor, to help provide a safe place for locals to skateboard. The dedication will take place on Cody's birthday.

"CRI, Arlington citizens, and city staff have worked for over six years to provide a safe place for skaters to gather,' Arlington Parks Project Manager Briana Morrison said. "We are excited to open our first of many such places and also to honor the Arlington resident who inspired this endeavor.'

Phase one of the skatepark includes a hipped bank, manual pad with rail, flat bar, and Spohn's signature "skateable art' pieces – the Curved Taco and Dragon Tail. Phase two of the project will include a mellow ledge, stair set with rail, pole jam, euro gap, kinked hubba, round wall and a Bent Penny.

According to De'Onna Garner, Arlington parks and recreation planning manager, the skatepark was designed to accommodate a wide range of skill levels.

"The goal was to create a park where beginner skaters could learn skills and advanced skaters could be challenged as well,' Garner said.

Funding for phase one of the skatepark was provided by a donation from Cody Rocamontes Inc., a Tony Hawk Foundation grant awarded to CRIand a grant from the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation. Phase two of the project is still in need of funding.
