The contest got off to an icy beginning with the wintery weather this Monday, the 9th of December, but that will not freeze up the enthusiasm and creativity of students in grades three through six competing in the thirteenth annual Arlington Animal Essay Contest.

Last year was one of the most competitive contests ever with over 1,000 entries. Butler Elementary School students had the most winning essays, followed by Ditto Elementary as students vied for the first, second and third place winning spots. One homeschooled student was among the twelve contest winners.

The contest promotes responsible pet ownership with thought provoking questions for each grade level. Essay topics range from input about volunteering at the Arlington Animal Services Center to overpopulation of homeless dogs and cats and their effects on the local ecosystem.

All students residing within Arlington city limits in third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades that attend public, private, or home school are encouraged to submit an original, thoughtful, and creative essay. The essay must be 500 words or less, focusing on multiple elements of effective writing.

Essay entries may be submitted beginning on Monday, January 13, 2014. The deadline for entry is at 5 p.m. on Friday, January 17, 2014.

Each winner will be presented with a Kindle Fire HD made possible by Vantage Energy and a $100 savings account thanks to EECU and Vantage Energy.

This year's Animal Essay Contest is sponsored by the City of Arlington, District 2 City Council member Sheri Capehart and community partners Vantage Energy, EECU, Star-Telegram, and UT Arlington's TRiO Pre-College Programs.

Winners will be recognized during a regular meeting of the Arlington City Council.
