The University of Texas at Arlington reached a record 38,650 Texas-based students for the spring 2016 semester, a 6 percent increase from a year ago, the school announced Tuesday, February 9, 2016.

At a time when most universities see declines in enrollment from fall to spring, UTA's numbers rose 4.4 percent from fall of 2015 when enrollment was 37,008.

The university now has a total of 50,661 degree seeking students on campus and in online degree programs. That number is projected to climb to 55,000 this year as new sections of online nursing and education degree programs begin throughout the spring and summer.

A newly designated Research-1 university by the Carnegie Classification, UTA is one of the state's largest public research institutions and the second largest in The University of Texas System.
