Dirk Nowitzki, #41 on the Dallas Mavericks, made a surprise visit to the Elzie Odom Athletic Center in North Arlington on Thursday, July 26, where the Mavericks were hosting their annual Hoop Camp. Seeing the seven-foot center from Wurzburg, Germany climb out of a Chevy Suburban as camp was about to begin was a surprise to the staff and campers. Towering over the kids, Dirk signed photos, shared some basketball skills, played a few games and gave the kids a pointer or two.

The Mavericks pride themselves on using the best coaching staff in Texas. They are handpicked for their knowledge and ability to work well with kids. The Mavericks combine excellent coaching with a proven program focused on personalized attention for each camper. More than 38,000 kids have enjoyed Hoop Camp across North Texas over the past 18 years.

The Maverick's Hoop Camp at Elzie Odom Athletic Center allows kids to have fun learning the game during a fast paced week of physical exercise including running, jumping and playing. Each participant develops basketball skills and works together in an atmosphere of communication, cooperation, and teamwork.

The Parks and Recreation Department is currently accepting registration for fall sports through August 31 for t-ball, coach pitch, inline hockey and outdoor soccer. Youth basketball registration will begin on October 1.
