Value of Water Mini Poster Contest Winner

Whether turning on the faucet, spending a day at the beach, or washing a load of laundry, Arlington students value the role water plays in their lives. They showed that appreciation this fall with entries in the 2022 Value of Water Mini Poster Contest, sponsored by Arlington Water Utilities.

Co-sponsors of the yearly contest are Tarrant Regional Water District, Arlington Public Library and River Legacy Nature Center. Judges from the sponsoring organizations chose winners of the contest Tuesday. Entries were received in six categories, divided by age from pre-k to 4th grade. Kindergarteners through fourth-graders entering the contest illustrated an answer to the question, "Why water is important to you?” They were also asked to write a few sentences about what they drew and why water is important. Pre-kindergarten students completed coloring sheets from the EPA’s WaterSense website.

Winners’ answers illustrated the vital role water plays in our lives. Daniella, from Goodman Elementary, said: “Water is important because it can keep the world clean and it can let the fishies be alive…and it even helps the streets and cars be clean and shiny.”

Smitika, from Swift Elementary added: “Save water, save the earth. Save every drop of water. Without water, no one can exist even for a day.”

Winners of this year’s Value of Water Mini Poster Contest will receive a prize pack that includes STEM activity kits, water-related books and free passes to the upcoming “Here Be Dragons: From Lizards to Legends” exhibit at the River Legacy Nature Center.

Each winner, their family, and their teacher will also receive an invitation to be recognized in-person at the Arlington City Council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The water department will also display the winning entries at Arlington City Hall or the Arlington Water Utilities South Service Center until the following October. Posters of winning entries will also be provided to each child’s school for recognition.

The coloring contest is held annually to partner with a national event called Imagine a Day Without Water, which falls on Oct. 20 this year. Click here to get involved with or read more about the awareness campaign.
