The University of Texas at Arlington’s Maverick Theatre Company presents “Spring Awakening” April 9-12, 2021. This Tony Award nominated rock musical is based on the 1819 German play, written by Frank Wedekind.
The production features members of UTA’s Maverick Theatre Company including: Edward Escamilla (Melchior), Martina Manguerra (Wendla), Jacob Wyckstrom (Moritz), Emily Truelove (Ilse), Sid Polezcek (Hanschen), Max Rose (Ernst), Fatima Flores (Martha), Kobie Jackson (Thea), Madeleine Sandoval (Anna), Brock Huerter (Georg), Andre’ Williams (Otto), Max Swenson (Dieter), James Ryan Kazen (Rupert/Herr Stiefel), Jack Synder (Reinhold/Father Kaulbach), Vincent Witherspoon (Ulbrecht/Herr Neumann), Drew Denton (Herr Gabor), Campbell Bovaird (Headmaster Knochenbruch/Herr Rilow), Spencer Bovaird (Herr Sonnenstitch/Schmidt), Logan Martinez (Doctor Van Brausepulver), Megan DuChene (Fanny Gabor), Audrey Ham (Frau Bergman), Reoni Newsome (Fraulein Knuppeldick), Marissa Nelson (Fraulein Grossebustenhalter), Ashley Tysor (Frau Bessell), with an ensemble including Bridget Andersen, Amanda Fink, Victoria Gomez, and Leslie Navarro.
“Spring Awakening” is directed by J. Austin Eyer, musical direction by Jocelyn Hansen, associate music direction by Vicky Nooe, set design by Ken Ellis, costume design by Laurie Land, light and sound design by Jared Land, videography by Alex Vorse, technical direction by DJ Badon, and stage management by Valos Lowe.
Performances will be streamed via Video On Demand due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
"We had to carefully plan and re-think how we normally rehearse and perform theatre," Eyer said. "Almost all of our music was rehearsed online, and then we took two actors at a time into a recording studio to record the songs for the show. In order to keep everyone safe we designed six plexi-glass boxes for actors in large ensemble scenes, as well as three plexi-glass partitions. All unmasked actors are staged at least 18 feet a part, and masked actors at least 8 feet apart."
