City Charter Amendment Special Election

Arlington residents voted to approve proposed amendments the City’s Charter relative to City Council term lengths during the Nov. 8, 2022, Special Election.

Residents were asked to vote “for” or “against” amendments to Sections 4 and 9 of Article IV and Section 2 of Article V of the City Charter to lengthen City Council terms from two years to three years. Approximately 83.6% of residents voted to approve extending term lengths while 16.4% voted against making any changes, according to unofficial vote totals.

The longer term length does not apply to current office holders. Starting with the May 2023 election, the term will be three years for those who are elected as Mayor or City Council members for District 3, 4, 5 and 8. The same will apply to those who are elected as City Council members for District 1, 2, 6 and 7 in May 2024.
