Face shield design

If you have a baseball cap, SA-SO, a signs and safety company in Arlington, can make you a one-size-fits-all face shield. In just a week, the company has already made more than 15,000 of the new products and shipped them throughout the country. Orders for more are still coming in, says Joe Nussbaum, president of SA-SO.

SA-SO is considered an essential business because it supports utilities and telecommunications. Nussbaum said the idea for the face shield – a thin piece of clear plastic that attaches securely to a baseball cap with five large paper clips – came after he put the word out to the business community that SA-SO wanted to do something to help those on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. Responses SA-SO received showed that face shields were a big need. A look around the factory at baseball-cap wearing employees inspired a bolt of inspiration, Nussbaum says.

From design to prototype took just one day. Then, a little over a week ago, Nussbaum demonstrated his new product in a YouTube video. It has been viewed more than 3,000 times and orders from all across the U.S. have poured in.

“It’s a little bit of everything. It’s some retailers ordering them. It’s some assisted living places. Some food service places. It’s just all over the place,” says Nussbaum.

As other work at the Arlington plant has continued, one group of SA-SO’s 56 employees have been focusing on the face shields. Nussbaum says: “It’s really exciting and it’s exciting for our people here too, because it’s nice to be able to do something about this. To be able to do something is really therapeutic. We’ll keep this up as long as there is a demand for the product.”

The face shields from SA-SO are sold in boxes of 50 for $85. For more information, visit the SA-SO website at www.sa-so.com.
