On the Clock: City Crews Create New Crosswalk — Without Using Paint

When you see a new crosswalk or bright new stripes on the road, it's easy to assume a fresh coat of paint was added. But the City of Arlington takes a different approach.

In the latest episode of On the Clock, Arlington City Manager Trey Yelverton joins a street crew to update a crosswalk.

Arlington's Public Works and Transportation Department has traded paint for large pre-formed adhesives.

Crews start by using a grinder to clear the faded markings. Then the adhesives are put into place. They're activated using a blowtorch and quickly adhere to the road.

The adhesives also have reflective glass built in, making it easier for drivers to see the markings at night. In the past, crews had to manually add the glass to wet paint.

The adhesives last five years compared to about a year for a coat of paint.
