Upcoming Project Will Strengthen Sanitary Sewer Infrastructure Near Lake Arlington

A $4.8 million Arlington Water Utilities project, set to begin in October, will include the replacement of more than a mile of large diameter sanitary sewer main through parts of Lake Arlington Golf Course.

The main, which ranges in size from 24-inches to 36-inches in diameter, has a history of failures that required emergency repairs. An examination using a robot that floats through the sewer main is allowing the City to target areas for replacement based on laser, sonar and video data that was gathered. In addition to the replacement of about 6,000 linear feet of sanitary sewer main, the upcoming project also includes erosion protection repairs to the spillway outlet at Lake Arlington Dam, located in Lake Arlington Golf Course.

Some winter-time closures of parts of the golf course will be necessary to complete the work. The Arlington Parks and Recreation Department, which runs the golf course, will inform players in advance of any changes. Visit www.arlingtongolf.com for up-to-date information about the golf course.

The project was funded in part by the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency program that is administered by the Texas Water Development Board.

Every day, millions of gallons of wastewater are carried through the City of Arlington's 1,200-mile sanitary sewer system to the Trinity River Authority’s Central Regional Wastewater System for treatment. About 48 miles of the mains are large diameter, meaning they are from 24-inches to 72-inches in diameter. Starting in 2016, an engineering partnership between Arlington Water Utilities and the University of Texas in Arlington used a multi-sensor robot to examine these large mains and identify those that might be more prone to failure. The project, called the Large Diameter Sanitary Sewer Assessment, will save the City millions of dollars in project costs because it allows targeted replacements to the areas where they are most needed.

In July 2019, Flow-Line Construction, Inc., of Dallas, was awarded the contract for the replacement project. It is expected to be complete by summer 2020. Replacing the sanitary sewer main is expected to reduce maintenance cost and improve quality of service.
