Residents Pitch in to Help City Remove 4 Tons of Debris at Lake Arlington Highlands Community Cleanup
A total of 17.13 tons (yes, that’s 34,260 pounds) of trash, junk and debris have been removed from Arlington neighborhoods thanks to the new Neighborhood Enhancement Team. Amazingly, this total is from just three neighborhood events.
“The time and effort the city has spent on this is wonderful,” said Sandy Godwin, a Lake Arlington Highlands resident of 34 years. “I love to keep our neighborhood neat and inviting and I think this is wonderful!”
Yard waste, old fence panels, broken appliances, trash and lots of other items are disappearing from, and transforming neighborhoods into a cleaner, safer community through this team effort and partnership of city staff, Republic Services, property owners and volunteers.
Most recently, on Saturday, Feb. 22, Godwin’s neighborhood had 4.11 tons (8,220 pounds) of trash and debris removed during their neighborhood cleanup. There were 35 Lake Arlington Highlands residents in attendance at a block party held on the day of the event to celebrate their neighborhood beautification efforts.
“We are in neighborhoods to help,” said Sergio Erazo, senior code compliance officer assigned to the Neighborhood Enhancement Team. “Building positive relationships and partnerships through this program between residents and the City helps neighbors and neighborhoods.”
Prior to a cleanup event, residents are invited to a neighborhood meeting where multiple city departments discuss opportunities that may benefit their neighborhood, keeping neighborhoods clean and safe, and ways to connect with the city and each other.
Proactive outreach is then provided through personal contact, door hangers and educational information. Conversations with residents about concerns in their neighborhood or at home helps connect the dots between residents and City resources or private volunteer and service organizations.
During the community cleanup day, the Neighborhood Enhancement Team, Arlington Fire and Police departments together with volunteers canvass the neighborhood and are there to help residents in need of physical assistance, pick up litter along thoroughfares and visit with residents at the block party.
