Hunter Pence, a professional baseball player and University of Texas at Arlington alumnus, has teamed up with the Texas Trees Foundation to plant 100 trees at his former elementary school here in The American Dream City.

Pence, who most recently played with his hometown Texas Rangers, is asking the community to help him raise $35,000 so the Texas Trees Foundation can build a Cool Schools Green Learning Environment at J.B. Little Elementary in Arlington.

The nonprofit Texas Trees Foundation is working to increase the tree canopy in the Dallas-Fort Worth area as part of its Cool Schools initiative. The planned outdoor area at Little Elementary, which would be designed by teachers, students and their parents, will include trees, benches, boulders and other amenities. As part of the Cool Schools program, teachers would also be provided training and resources, including curriculum developed by the Texas Trees Foundation, as well as interactive educational activities to help create hands-on environmental learning experiences for students.

According to Pence’s fundraising site, the Texas Trees Foundation and the Texas Rangers Foundation together will match every donation dollar for dollar up, to $15,000. More than $27,000 has been raised as of late November. Once the fundraising goal is met, Pence is expected to lead a Tree Planting Day on the Little campus during his off season.
