Smiles and helping hands of volunteers were abundant and greatly appreciated at the Neighborhood Enhancement Team (NET) cleanup event in east Arlington’s community of Homemaker Hills held on April 22, 2023.

“Every individual was encouraging. I was very embarrassed of my property, and no one ever made me feel less for the appearance of my property,” said Margaret (Maggie) Kearly, a 54-year resident and original homeowner in Homemaker Hills. “Everyone has been so sweet, and it has been a VERY positive experience!”

Kearly was assisted with removal of overgrown trees and other vegetation during the cleanup and said she was “absolutely stunned at the help.”

The tool sharing trailer was on-site with mowers, edgers, tree-trimming equipment and more to assist volunteers and residents with the cleanup. Word is spreading about the tool sharing program available for Arlington residents. Free use of tools and equipment for property cleanup and maintenance is a valuable asset for the community and made easy with doorstep delivery and pickup of checked out items.

A total of 9.42 tons (18,840 pounds) of debris was removed in this community effort, bringing the total tonnage of trash and debris removed at NET cleanup events to 136.62 tons (273,240 pounds). This continuing success is made possible by the help of wonderful volunteers and residents working to improve their properties.

Together with dedicated community partners, Arlington is becoming cleaner and safer, one neighborhood at a time. Special appreciation to Arlington Hispanic Citizen Police Academy and to all volunteers, residents and community partners that worked this special event.

Each NET community cleanup day concludes with a block party for neighbors to meet each other, community partners and city staff, to have a hot dog and refreshments, enjoy a game of cornhole, Giant Jenga and more.
