Public Meeting Notice

The Department of Public Works and Transportation is pleased to announce construction on a project to transform Harris Road between Cooper Street and Calender Road is scheduled to begin on March 1, 2021. This project is expected to be completed in fall of 2022 and includes the following improvements:

  • Reconstructing Harris Road from a two-lane asphalt roadway to a three-lane concrete roadway
  • Modifications to the intersection of Harris Road and Cooper Street and installation of new traffic signals
  • Construction of sidewalks and ADA compliant pedestrian ramps
  • Street light improvements
  • Pavement markings
  • Installation of storm drainage infrastructure and upgrading existing box culverts in Rush Creek
  • Water and sanitary infrastructure improvements

Throughout construction, the contractor will ensure access to neighborhoods and driveways are maintained to the greatest extent possible; however, to minimize overall traffic congestion and increase public safety, Harris Road, from Cooper Street to Calender Road, will be closed to all eastbound traffic for the entire duration of construction. The road will remain open to westbound traffic. Please keep in mind that with any roadway construction project, travel delays are inevitable, and we ask that you take this into consideration when planning your daily commute.

Harris Road is included as a major collector on the City’s Thoroughfare Development Plan (TDP). The TDP is a long-range plan that identifies the location and type of roadway facilities needed to meet projected long-term within the City of Arlington. Arlington voters approved funding for this project as part of the 2014 Bond Election Street Improvements Package. The improvements planned align with the City Council’s priorities to Enhance Regional Mobility and Champion Great Neighborhoods.

Residents interested in learning more about this project are encouraged to attend a Construction Briefing Meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2021, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. To advance the public health goal of limiting face-to-face meetings to slow the spread of COVID-19, this meeting will be held virtually and will be accessible online or via telephone. Detailed information on how to participate in the meeting is available in the “Public Meeting” tab of the Harris Road project web page.
